Transformation in Saffron Production and Export through the Digital Economy and Knowledge-Based Activities

According to the Public Relations Office of the Khorasan Razavi Chamber of Commerce, Industries, Mines and Agriculture, quoted on Ali Shariati Moghadam’s official information portal, saffron is now cultivated in 30 countries worldwide, with China utilizing advanced scientific and technological expertise in its production efforts.

Ali Shariati Moghadam, Chairman of the Commission on Knowledge-Based Economy and Digital Economy of the Mashhad Chamber of Commerce, emphasized that Saudi Arabia has also made the largest investments in saffron cultivation. He cautioned that without a coherent national plan, Iran could face serious and multifaceted challenges in maintaining its leading role in saffron production and export.

He explained that a comprehensive and practical roadmap is being developed for the saffron industry. The first step involves assessing the actual and potential capacities of saffron production across the country. Based on these findings, a detailed operational plan will be prepared to serve as a roadmap that defines the responsibilities and roles of each organization and stakeholder involved in the sector.

Highlighting Iran’s shortcomings in mechanizing saffron cultivation, Shariati Moghadam stressed that science and technology parks can play a decisive role in mechanizing the saffron value chain. Although knowledge-based companies and innovation parks have repeatedly declared readiness to contribute, concrete action and implementation have yet to materialize.
