Efforts to Enhance the Global Competitiveness of Iranian Saffron

According to the Public Relations Office of the Khorasan Razavi Chamber of Commerce, Industries, Mines and Agriculture, quoted on Ali Shariati Moghadam’s official information website, many countries have turned to saffron cultivation, and climatic changes have expanded both the scientific and environmental boundaries of saffron farming. Therefore, Iran must support producers and active associations in this sector to improve both the quantity and quality of production and to take strategic steps in global marketing, thereby boosting the competitiveness of Iranian saffron in international markets.

Organization of the National Saffron Day Festival

Shariati Moghadam also referred to efforts made to organize a successful conference and festival on National Saffron Day, explaining that the Mashhad Chamber of Commerce assumed full responsibility for the event’s management. In total, 35 specialized meetings and 6 executive committees were formed to coordinate festival and conference activities. Tasks were distributed among relevant stakeholders, and several key events were held, including:

  • A photo exhibition devoted to saffron and its heritage
  • Unveiling of new saffron-based products and innovations
  • Participation of exemplary producers and exporters of saffron

These activities aimed to showcase achievements and strengthen the visibility of Iran’s saffron industry.

Traceability and Market Recognition of Iranian Saffron

He further highlighted the importance of establishing a traceability system (“شنا‌سنامه‌دار کردن”) for saffron, noting that products without certification cannot be properly tracked. Once traceability is ensured, global marketing and branding initiatives must follow. The greatest challenge, he argued, is that Iranian saffron remains insufficiently recognized worldwide despite its dominance in production.

Strategic Coordination through Specialized Commissions

As a member of the Mashhad Chamber’s Board of Representatives, Shariati Moghadam added that during a special foresight workshop on saffron, 10 specialized commissions of the Chamber — covering production, industry, exports, technology, and agriculture — committed to designing a coordinated one‑year program to enhance production, productivity, exports, and the overall advancement of saffron and its derivative products. The goal, he explained, is to create an integrated and effective operational chain to sustain and strengthen Iran’s leadership in the global saffron economy.
