The Role of Contract Farming in Meeting Countries’ Needs
Citing the Public Relations Office of the Khorasan Razavi Chamber of Commerce, Industries, Mines and Agriculture, Ali Shariati Moghadam discussed the concept and history of contract farming, noting that many nations have long met their food‑supply needs through this model. He explained that the share of contract farming in developing countries is now very high — for example, 90 percent of Vietnam’s cotton production and cultivation is carried out under contractual agreements.
“In Iran,” he said, “contract farming has been partially implemented within the food‑processing industry, yet despite multiple efforts, it currently accounts for only one percent of the nation’s agricultural output.” Shariati Moghadam emphasized that the future of agriculture worldwide will increasingly rely on contractual models.
Technology and Productivity as Growth Drivers
He identified technological advancement and productivity enhancement as the key factors for revitalizing Iran’s agricultural sector. “Paying closer attention to these standards,” he explained, “is crucial for increasing the efficiency and the overall significance of crop cultivation.”
Transition from Traditional to Modern Agriculture
Referring to joint research by the Iran Chamber of Commerce and the Mashhad Chamber of Commerce on agricultural vulnerability, Shariati Moghadam noted that the most effective measure to reduce systemic risk is moving away from traditional practices toward technology‑based, high‑efficiency farming.
He added that a special working group under the Iran Chamber’s Agricultural Commission is being developed, focused on attracting investors to innovative agricultural projects. “If this effort succeeds,” he concluded, “Khorasan Razavi Province will overcome its current lag in modern agricultural development.”
